My Personal History Project Part 1

My personal history

This is the first phase of your year long history project, and it starts with you. Anyone who lives in the United States has a history here, and is a part of the larger picture of US History. This assignment will challenge you to:

  • Write a narrative (storyline) of your personal history. Be sure to include major events, successes, failures, or any other information that you feel is important in telling your story.
  • Next, do the same for your parent(s) or guardian; ask them to put their history into a narrative. Have this narrative stop when the story gets to your entrance into their life. Place this text before your life story.
  • Next, research about grandparents and other relatives, and try to (if you can) trace the source of your family’s migration within and/or immigration to the United States (if this applies).
  • Last, ask about some major historical events in US History that happened during the lives about all the people you write about (including yourself). For many of you, the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks will have a similar historical relevance as something like the start of the Gulf war, the Challenger explosion, Nixon’s resignation, JFK’s assassination, the VJ day, and on. Give at least two historical events to each generation.
  • Your work should go through at least three generations (you can do more if you wish). If you are not sure where to go to find information about your family; perhaps because of adoption or other reasons, you can interview someone from the assisted living center across the street, or talk to a neighbor, a teacher, or someone else from the community.

This should be no more than two pages. Due date: Wednesday, Sep. 23
